West Tennessee Volunteer Services salutes Ministers in a Minute staff for help during the Memphis flood of 2011
![]() | While normally performing wedding services in the River City...Father Ken Zelten OFM, and Dr. Sebastian Owens DD, along with many of the ministerial staff of this popular West Tennessee wedding service, found themselves knee deep in "Old man River" this past May. Fr. Zelten and staff took turns, around the clock, filling and stacking sand bags to help fend off the rising flood waters, which already left much of West Tennessee, and the Southern Delta under up to thirteen feet of water. |
For us there was never a choice, Dr. Owens said, between scoops of sand into the plastic bags, hoping to holdback flood waters. Father Ken has always made it a priority for Ministers in a Minute to help the community in any way possible. Whether that is ministering to the homeless population of Memphis, or filling sandbags. We want Memphis to know that we take "serving the community" very seriously.

![]() | Many people lost everything they had in the flood. The areas affected were some of the most impoverished in West tennesse, said Dr. Gretchen Meyers; Assistant Educational director, at Ministers in a Minute. Memphis is home for most of us. Giving back to the community is from the heart. We all would like to think that our neighbors would be there for us.

Because of the actions of these volunteers, and many other like them, The Memphis area was saved from a much more catastrophic flood season. In some parts of the city, clean-up and rebuilding from the epic flood continues.
